Report on Public Outreach Materials of the AQMD

As discussed at past Governing Board meetings and, most recently, during the July 21, 1995 meeting of the Administrative Committee, Board Members requested a list of all the District's major publications. Attached is the "AQMD Publications and Subscriptions List," which the public may use to obtain various AQMD materials. Also attached is a list of other outreach materials. (This list is also found in Appendix VI-B of the AQMP.)

These materials generally fall into two categories: those intended to assist permit-holders, consultants and others doing business with the District and those intended to inform and educate the public. Thus, they range from technical documents dealing with BACT and CEQA to simple "info" and "how to" brochures distributed at no cost. Also included are some of our subscription offerings, such as the monthly Board package, and a few videos. This list currently is being revised to include recently produced materials, such as the "Technology Advancement Office 1994 Progress Report" and some additional brochures, such as "Bidding for Clean Air Business," "Reporting Air Quality Problems," "How AQMD's Governing Board Works," "Variances and the Hearing Board" and "Small Business Assistance Resource Guide."

Subscriptions are expected to generate over $250,000 in revenue this year which will partially offset the cost of producing these materials. In addition, as we move toward putting this data on the Internet, we envision a sharp drop in the amount of material actually printed and distributed on paper.

These varied publications help us provide important information to our citizens . . . from outreach brochures to educate the public about the health effects of pollution to technical information disseminated to the regulated community to helping people understand the current state of the art of various strategies. The feedback we get from the public indicates they find AQMD publications to be helpful. For example, attached is a copy of a letter commenting on the TAO's Progress Report.

THEREFORE IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT THE BOARD

--Receive and file this report.

Sincerely,

James M. Lents, Ph.D.
