BOARD MEETING DATE: November 1, 2002 AGENDA NO. 9

PROPOSAL:

Amend Contract with Cal Poly Pomona Foundation, Inc. for Student Co-Op Program

SYNOPSIS:

Since August 1995, the AQMD has contracted with the Cal Poly Pomona Foundation for the services of student interns. The Co-Op Program is not exclusive to Cal Poly Pomona students, but is open to students who attend community colleges and universities in our region. Public Affairs began using the Student Co-Op Program in 1999. These interns perform such tasks as assisting with publications inventory, distribution of outreach materials and other tasks that introduce them to AQMD functions. Over the past three years a total of $49,000 has been expended. It is estimated that student intern services will be needed in this fiscal year, at a cost of $20,000. Funds for this item are available in the FY 2002-03 Budget.

COMMITTEE:

Administrative, October 11, 2002, Recommended for Approval

RECOMMENDED ACTION:

Authorize the Chairman to amend the existing contract with Cal Poly Pomona Foundation, Inc., for an amount not to exceed $20,000.

Barry R. Wallerstein, D.Env.
Executive Officer

Background

Since August 1995, the AQMD has been utilizing the services of student interns from the Co-Op Program of the Cal Poly Pomona Foundation. This program has been beneficial for both the AQMD and the student interns. College students who are selected in the program have gained work experience in the real world at the same time that they are earning credits for their college education. Students from Cal Poly Pomona and other Southern California colleges and universities (see Attachment #1) that offer accredited degrees may participate in the program.

These interns assist in the performance of such tasks as maintaining and tracking the inventory of AQMD outreach materials and publications, as well as filling requests for large orders of those materials; assisting staff at outreach events; providing assistance in the Public Information Center; and other tasks that introduce them to AQMD functions. The total amount expended on this contract through July 30, 2002 is $49,000. During FY 2002-03, Public Affairs plans to utilize the student intern services, at a cost not to exceed $20,000.

Proposal

Amend the existing contract with Cal Poly Pomona Foundation for Co-Op Program Services for an amount not to exceed $20,000 for FY 2002-03.

Resource Impacts

Funds are available in the FY 2002-03 Budget to cover the contract addition of $20,000 for student intern services.
