Background At the July 11, 2003 Board meeting, staff was directed to report back twice a year on the activities of Clean Cities Coalitions in the South Coast District. This letter summarizes the current and recent activities of the local Clean Cities Coalitions. The Clean Cities Program, initiated by the U.S. Department of Energy, draws local stakeholders from the public and private sectors. Represented are local, state and federal agencies; public health and transportation departments; transit agencies; and other government offices; as well as auto manufacturers, car dealers, fuel suppliers, public utilities, and professional associations. Participation in Clean Cities network activities is voluntary. AQMD Participation AQMD participated in the 10th National Clean Cities Conference and Expo, held in Fr. Lauderdale, Florida, May 2-5, 2004. Henry Hogo represented the AQMD on the Transit Trends panel. There are five Clean Cities Coalitions in the local area; AQMD is a member of all of them. The coalitions in order of designation are:
- Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG) Clean Cities Coalition The SCAG coalition hosted a National AFV Day Odyssey day event including all of the Clean City Coalitions in the South Coast area and the Ventura County APCD at the AQMD headquarters on April 8, 2004. This was a successful event attracting over 150 participants.
- Long Beach Clean Cities Coalition The coalition participated in the AFV Day Odyssey event at AQMD headquarters.
- Los Angeles City Clean Cities Coalition The coalition participated in the AFV Day Odyssey event at AQMD Headquarters.
- Coachella Valley Clean Cities Coalition in conjunction with the Deserts Energy Technology Center, this coalition hosted an AFV Odyssey Day event at the College of the Desert campus. The goal of the event was to educate students about the importance of alternative fuels and AFVs. The event was attended by over 500 students from area middle & high schools as well as students from the college. The coalition also participated in the AFV Day Odyssey event at AQMD headquarters.
- The Riverside County Clean Cities Coalition The Coalition recently opened a 24-hour public/private CNG station in Riverside. The grand opening was held on January 22, 2004. Additionally, they celebrated Odyssey Day by displaying AFVs in front of the city halls of each of their 14 stakeholder jurisdictions and participated in the multi coalition event held at AQMD headquarters.
AQMD Future Participation AQMD staff will continue to participate in the Clean Cities Program. Currently, staff is participating on the 2005 National Conference Planning committee. Attachment
