Background

On January 8, 1999, the Board approved a work plan to implement the Chairman’s Children’s Air Quality Agenda, which included a student intern program.  High school interns in the program are currently paid $7 per hour and college interns are paid $8 per hour.

Effective January 1, 2007, the State minimum wage increases to $7.50 per hour, and, on January 1, 2008, the rate will be $8 per hour.  To remain in compliance with minimum wage provisions and to ensure an appropriate pay level for student interns, the hourly intern pay rate needs to be increased.

Proposal

This action is to adjust the hourly pay for student intern program participants to $8 for high school students and $10 for college and graduate students.

Fiscal Impacts

The annual cost of this adjustment, based on budgeted intern hours, is $15,360; sufficient funds are available in the approved FY 2006-07 Budget.
