This report summarizes the activities of Public Affairs for June and July 2008. The report includes four major areas: Environmental Justice Update; Community Events/Public Meetings (including the Speakers Bureau/Visitor Services, Communications Center, and Public Information Center); Business Assistance; and Outreach to Business and Federal, State, and Local Government.

Environmental Justice Update

Below is a summary of the Environmental Justice related activities which occurred in June and July.

A Town Hall meeting was held on June 19 in the city of Maywood in Los Angeles County. The meeting served to provide area residents with updated information on local air quality including air sampling conducted around a local battery recycling facility. Over 100 people attended the meeting, which was chaired by AQMD Governing Board Member Dr. Joseph K. Lyou. Maywood Mayor Felipe Aguirre provided welcoming remarks which were followed by an AQMD staff presentation. Many of the attendees commented on a proposed power plant in the neighboring city of Vernon. Speakers requested that AQMD ensure that the community be kept informed on the proposed power plant.

On July 2, 2008 AQMD held a Public Consultation meeting in Bloomington for Proposed Amendments to Rule 1156, Further Reductions of Particulate Emissions from Cement Manufacturing Facilities. Over 100 people attended the meeting, which served to highlight the rule amendments which include further reduction of particulate matter, as well as hexavalent chromium emissions, from cement manufacturing facilities. The proposed rule amendment would also require the total enclosure of clinker material storage. The proposed amendments were pursued as one of many aggressive actions that were undertaken to reduce hexavalent chromium emissions from cement plants and lower risk levels in the communities around these facilities.

During the months of June and July, Public Affairs staff also addressed the following organizations:

  • American Jewish Committee
  • Asthma & Allergy Foundation of America
